Scientific Session

Track -1:  Hormones and Endocrine glands

Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood rather than through a duct. The major glands of the endocrine system include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, annular pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, hypothalamus and adrenal glands. Hormones are chemical signals that affect the behavior of other glands or tissues. Hormones influence the metabolism of cells, the growth and development of body parts, and homeostasis. Endocrine glands are ductless they secrete their hormones directly into tissue fluid. Endocrine glands can be contrasted with exocrine glands, which have ducts and secrete their products into these ducts. Which include food proteins, glycoproteins, and modified amino acids or a steroid hormone. Neurotransmitters are one example of signaling molecules that allow direct communication from cell to cell.

Track-2: Neuroendocrinology

Neuroendocrinology is the study of the interaction between the nervous system and the endocrine system diseases, including the biological features of the cells involved, and how they communicate. This Neuroscience and Psychiatry article proposes that changing levels of estradiol may directly modify the activity of dorsal and ventral emotional regulation nodes and circuits, modifying the cognitive and emotional consequences of life stress and leading to depression in women. Estrogen or oestrogen (see spelling differences) is the primary female sex hormone and is responsible for development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. Molecular hormones play crucial roles in the development and in the maintenance of an adult mammalian organism

Track-3: Endocrine Regulation

Regulation of Endocrine Systems: Secretion of hormones is regulated by a system of sensing elements possessing the means to detect need for both in Regulation of Endocrine Systems. Secretion of hormones is regulated by a system of sensing elements possessing the means to detect need for both increased and decreased secretion. The particular sensing network, feedback elements, and network of control responses are unique for each hormone. Hypoglycemia may be associated with symptoms such as anxiety, sweating, tremor, palpitations, nausea, and pallor. Hypoglycemia also starves the brain of glucose energy, which is essential for proper brain function.

Track-4: Challenges in Endocrinology

Major new health issues confront us some of which arise from our modern lifestyle and its consequent energy imbalance. In addition to obesity and diabetes, metabolic disorders will soon overtake smoking as the main avoidable cause of cancer. Vitamin D is essential for bone, muscle and other aspects in health. Sunlight (UVB) is the most important source of vitamin D (>90%). The main natural food source is fish, Breast milk contains vitamin D. Skin colour: Adults with dark skin (Fitzpatrick types V and VI) require 3-6 times the amount of UVB compared to people with light skin.

Osteoporosis comes with a considerable number of risk factors having already experienced menopause, family history of osteoporosis, female gender, especially females of Caucasian or Asian origin, history of age-related height loss, history of broken bones , such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease, age older than 50.

Track-5: Pediatric Endocrinology

Pediatric endocrinology is a medical subspecialty dealing with variations of physical growth and sexual development in childhood, as well as diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine glands. The pituitary gland, or hypophysis, is a small gland about 1 centimeter in diameter or the size of a pea. It is nearly surrounded by bone as it rests in the sella turcica, a depression disorders in the sphenoid bone. The gland is connected to the hypothalamus of the brain by a slender stalk called the infundibulum. A steroid hormone, such as testosterone or androsterone , that controls the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics. Also called androgenic hormone.

Track-7:Thyroid Gland and its Disorders

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. It’s part of an intricate network of glands called the endocrine system. The endocrine system is responsible for coordinating many of the body's activities. The thyroid gland manufactures prohormones that regulate the body's metabolism (the process of creating and using energy). There are hyperthyroidism several different disorders that can arise when the thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism). Fatigue disorders, depression, constipation, mild weight gain, dry skin, thinning hair, pale, puffy face, heavy and irregular menstruation, intolerance to cold, enlarged thyroid (goiter).

Track-8: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) is a surgical subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that trains physicians in reproductive medicine addressing hormonal functioning as it pertains to reproduction as well as the issue of infertility. Hyperandrogenism is one of the primary symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In such cases, it presents with symptoms such as acne and seborrhea, is frequent in adolescent girls and is often associated with irregular menstrual cycles. Normally, the cervix prevents bacteria that enter the vagina from spreading to the internal reproductive organs. If the cervix is exposed to a sexually transmitted disease -- such as gonorrhea and/or chlamydia the cervix itself becomes infected and less able to prevent the spread of organisms to the internal organs. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) occurs when the disease-causing organisms travel from the cervix to the upper genital tract. Untreated gonorrhea and chlamydia cause about 90% of all cases of PID. Other causes include abortion, childbirth, and chronic pelvic pain procedures.

Track-9:Diabetic Disorders and Treatment

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of diabetes and metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience polyuria (frequent urination), they will become increasingly thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia). Distinguishing between type 1 and type 2 diabetes at diagnosis is important. Typical characteristics of type 2 diabetes include the, Slow and insidious onset, Most common in overweight or obese patients from a minority group (Native Americans, blacks, and Pacific Islanders), Signs of insulin resistance, Strong family history of type 2 diabetes: Familial lifestyle risk factors leading to obesity may be present, as may a family history of cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome. Pediatric Diabetes is a type 1 diabetes mellitus requires insulin therapy.

Track-10: Energy Balance and Obesity

“Energy balance” is the relationship between “energy in” (food calories taken into the body through food and drink) and “energy out” (calories being used in the body for our daily energy requirements). This relationship, which is defined by the laws of thermodynamics, dictates whether weight is lost, gained, or remains the same. Causes of obesity: it is one of the most pervasive, chronic diseases in need of new strategies for medical treatment and prevention. As a leading cause of United States mortality, comorbidity, disability, healthcare utilization and healthcare costs, the high prevalence of obesity continues to strain the United States healthcare system.

Track-11: Treatment and Diagnosis of Endocrine Diseases

Endocrine glands, they are the hormone-producing glands in the body, and the common ones are thyroid, parathyroid harmones, pancreas and adrenal glands. If the thyroid endocrinology is making extra prohormones, a patient will have symptoms like anxiety, tremors, sweating, palpitations, or difficulty falling asleep. Initially, this is managed with medication, or there are pills like radioactive iodine that can destroy the thyroid gland. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that, at certain doses, can interfere with the endocrine (or hormone) system in mammals. These disruptions can cause cancerous brain tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Addison's disease (also Addison disease, chronic adrenal insufficiency, hypocortisolism, and hypoadrenalism) is a rare, chronic endocrine system disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce sufficient steroid hormones (glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids).

Track-12:  Case Reports and Others

Lipid disorders are a group of medical conditions which refer to excessive levels of fatty substances in the bloodstream. These fatty substances include cholesterol and triglycerides. An excess of bad cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. A paraganglioma is rare neuroendocrine neoplasm that may develop at various body sites (including the head, neck, thorax and abdomen). About 97% are benign and cured by surgical removal; the remaining 3% are malignant neoplasm because they are able to produce distant metastases. "Paraganglioma" is now the most-widely accepted term for these lesions, that have been also described as: glomus tumor, chemodectoma, perithelioma, fibroangioma, and congential nevi. Metabolic disorders of bone strength, usually caused by abnormalities of minerals (such as calcium or phosphorus), vitamin D, bone mass or bone structure. The most common metabolic bone disorder is osteoporosis.

Scope and Importance of Endocrinology

Endocrinology Conference deals with the Endocrinology which is a branch of science dealing with the endocrine glands. Endocrinology includes the study of hormones, the endocrine system, and their role in the physiology of the body. Endocrinology is a specialty of medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to hormones. Endocrinology deals with the human functions as the coordination of metabolism, respiration, reproduction, sensory perception, and movement. The medical specialty of endocrinology involves the diagnostic evaluation of a wide variety of symptoms and variations and the long-term management of disorders of deficiency or excess of one or more hormones. The diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases are guided by laboratory tests to a greater extent than for most specialties. ·  Many diseases are investigated through ''excitation/stimulation'' or ''inhibition/suppression'' testing. This might involve injection with a stimulating agent to test the function of an endocrine organ. Blood is then sampled to assess the changes of the relevant hormones or metabolites. An endocrinologist needs extensive knowledge of clinical chemistry and biochemistry to understand the uses and limitations of the investigations.  Diagnostic imaging of endocrine organs may reveal incidental findings called incidentalomas, which may or may not represent disease. Some of the most common endocrine diseases include diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism and the metabolic syndrome. Care of diabetes, obesity and other chronic diseases necessitates understanding the patient at the personal and social level as well as the molecular, and the physician–patient relationship can be an important therapeutic process. Apart from treating patients, many endocrinologists are involved in clinical science and medical research, teaching, and hospital management.

Conference series puts together the entire eminent endocrinologist across the globe to share their knowledge and views on the respective conference theme.

Market Research on Endocrinology

Novartis AG’s Signifor won U.S. regulatory approval to treat the rare hormone condition known as Cushing’s disease IN 2012. About 2 or 3 people for every 1 million will develop non-medicine related Cushing’s each year in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health.

Based on diagnostic technologies, the tandem mass spectrometry diagnostic technique was the largest segment of the global endocrine testing market. The report also names immunoassays and sensor technologies as rapidly growing segments of the global endocrine testing market. The report also cites findings published by Elsevier, Inc., which examine the geriatric population above 65, of which 13.7% have subclinical hypothyroidism and 1.7% have hypothyroidism. Owing to the increasing number of diabetics all over the world, the global endocrine testing market's fastest growing testing segment is set to be the insulin test. The ambulatory care centers segment is set to show the fastest growth rate within the report's forecast period. Top reasons for this segment's growth are a speedier response rate and lower costs than the ones a patient would otherwise incur. The home-based tests segment is also showing promising development opportunities and is predicted to gain a greater market share in the near future. On the other hand, commercial laboratories will continue to gain momentum in terms of revenue generation and consequently invest more in further research. The report also cites information released by the World Health Organization (WHO), in which the WHO states its prediction of diabetes becoming the seventh leading cause of death in the world by 2030. Nearly 80% deaths related to diabetes occur in middle-to-low-income homes, as the disease is exacerbated by poor management.
