Endocrine Tumours and Neoplasia
It is estimated that over 12,000 Americans are diagnosed with an endocrine tumor every year. Over 1,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with Merkel cell skin cancer each year. Most of the people diagnosed with the disease are over age 50, and 90% of cases occur in white people. The 5-year survival rate of people with Merkel cell cancer is about 60%. MEN1 (Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1) is a hereditary condition associated with tumors of the endocrine glands. MEN1 was originally known as Wermer syndrome. It is estimated that about 1 in 30,000 people has MEN1.
